For more than 30 years, Mfuzo Boxing Camp has used boxing to create opportunities for young people in Makhanda.
Mfuzo Boxing Camp was established in October 1995 by a group of local boxing enthusiasts who wanted to revive the sport in Makhanda and pass their knowledge on to a younger generation.
The camp began with limited equipment and no permanent training venue. Transporting athletes to competitions was also a challenge. Despite these difficulties, the coaches and volunteers remained committed to the young people they served.
Over the years, Mfuzo Boxing Camp has grown into an important part of the local sporting community. It has helped young people develop their boxing skills, compete at different levels and become more disciplined and responsible members of their communities.
Today, the camp continues to provide structured training, mentorship and opportunities for young people who want to learn, grow and work towards their goals.
We encourage young people to remain focused, work consistently and take responsibility for their development.
Every participant is expected to respect their coaches, teammates, opponents and the wider community.
We create opportunities for girls and boys from different backgrounds to participate, develop their abilities and feel part of a team.
Progress takes time. We teach young people to keep showing up, keep learning and remain committed to their goals.
We help young athletes gain experience, compete at higher levels and discover where their talent can take them.
The camp is built on the support of coaches, volunteers, families, partners and community members who want young people to succeed.
Mfuzo Boxing Camp has produced athletes who have competed at district, provincial and national levels. Its boxers have earned provincial and South African titles, with both women and men representing Makhanda and the Eastern Cape.
The camp’s achievements include developing South African champion Siphosethu “Yellow Bone” Daweti and Eastern Cape champions Lihlelethu Nzuzo and Masibulele Liwani.
These results are not only measured in medals. Every young person who develops confidence, stays committed to training and makes better choices represents an important achievement for the camp.
Our work is made possible by the commitment of our coaches, volunteers, families, sponsors and community partners.
Whether you want to join the camp, support an athlete, donate equipment or partner with the organisation, there is a place for you at Mfuzo Boxing Camp.
